DJ Floro

The third outing of the Republicafrobeat series, expertly selected and compiled by DJ Floro. It's a superb collection of dancefloor afrobeat, that meshes the original spirit of vitality and protest inherent in Fela's music with crisp studio production from a range of collaborating artists.

Solid Steel Presents DJ Kentaro: On The Wheels Of Solid Steel

Kentaro Album Cover

Heading cross-town at the height of the Beijing rush hour does not feature on my shortlist of favourite urban activities. Illogical pedestrian manoeuvres do little to alleviate the stress of a frantic underground system. However, if you need to harness your seething metro-rage and focus on getting from A to B, then Kentaro's Solid Steel debut is the perfect soundtrack for you. The first half of the mix hovers somewhere between frantic yet palatable drum n bass and snare-heavy Squarepusher style insanity. It had me completing the infamous Xizhimen changeover in record time grinning from ear to ear.

Kentaro's tasteful turntablism defines the album as he juggles records and genres with equal aptitude. His razor-tight skills are all the more impressive in that the cutting and chopping never encroaches on the nodability factor, nor does it devalue the superb selection. Ninja Tunes heads will be glad to hear a few stock anthems worked into the melee as the album progresses, and although a number of these have seen the light of day on previous Solid Steel compilations, they're lent an air of freshness by an array of cheeky juggles and edits.

Hailing from the Ninja stables, not only does this compilation have the mark of intelligence and quality you'd expect, but the sustained energy will help you samurai-slice your way through crowds of tube-goers like never before. Gangwaaaaay!
